Make Your Adult Halloween Party a Great One!

September 17th, 2007 by Admin

Fun Halloween PartysHalloween parties for adults can include a wide variety of events. It may take some time to put together a theme that can keep the entire guest list entertained, but it really can be worth the effort. Costume parties are a huge hit with adults; you can have the guests wear masks during the night to keep the party even more interesting.

Below is a list of things that a Halloween party should include to be considered a successful one.

Music – You can not have a Halloween party without party music. It needs to be upbeat and energetic with a wide variety of artist to choose from. This defiantly includes a lot of Halloween songs, both creepy and funny. No one wants to be at a slow boring party.

Adult games – This doesn’t have to be anything dramatic, just something to help keep everyone involved. Parties held in places that have a pool table are most enjoyable, as this game always keeps an interesting conversation going on. Throwing darts is very entertaining for many adults. Karaoke, strength games and skill contest are also very popular.

Best overall costume – You can’t have a Halloween party without having a costume judging. Although to keep everybody happy the party should probably have two contests with separate categories. One contest would be for the goriest costume around to appeal to the guests that love to show off their favorite scary costume. The other contest would be for the guests that prefer to stay away from the gruesome and bloody costumes. Both contests should be judged on their originality and design.

Refreshments – A great Halloween party for adults includes a large assortment of refreshments. This would include both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Having bartenders to provide this service is important to help keep things simple and keep the guest happy.

Decorations – Going to a party with well crafted decorations is lots of fun. These help to keep you in the Halloween sprit throughout the entire party.

Accommodations – Some of the most successful adult Halloween parties ever held took place where the accommodations allowed you to have at least two separate main areas. One where your guest can party and make all the noise they feel like. The other main area would be where anyone can share a drink and hold a conversation if so desired.

Father/daughter Relationships in the Poem daddy by Sylvia Plath

June 3rd, 2007 by Admin

Daddy by Sylvia Plath is by right considered a magnificent poem about daughters relationship with a father. Also it can also be read as an allegory of female yielding and final revolt in a mens world who have been responsible for all the disasters and wars of the twentieth century. In accordance with this poem women are oppressed and subdued in society by masculine priorities.

Occult Fiction: Novels For Your Private Collection, Part 1

June 3rd, 2007 by Admin

For years I’ve heard complaints about a lack of Occult fiction portraying Witches realistically in a contemporary setting. And it’s true. As a Wiccan and novelist writing Occult fiction, I’m just as much a fan of the genre as any reader. However, I have found if you search carefully, there are dazzling gems awaiting discovery, novels that should be a part of your contemporary Occult fiction collection.

To find these novels I have narrowed my search criteria to dark urban fantasy novels set in contemporary times or in the near future. At least half the rituals, magick, or sorcery used by the main character must be based on real magickal principles. The main character must be human, and the plot not overshadowed by trendy leagues of vampires.

Having set those guidelines, I want to present my first recommendation for must-read Occult fiction. All I can say is if you’ve never read Lilith Saintcrow’s “Dante Valentine” series you are in for a treat!

Saintcrow is best known for her paranormal romance novels, the “Watcher” series, featuring elemental Witches and their handsome guardians. However, Dante Valentine was created from an entirely different cut of cloth!

There are five novels in the series. The first two, “Working for the Devil” and “Dead Man Rising” have already been published. The last three novels are scheduled for publication in 2007 and 2008.

Dante Valentine is a Neocromance, who works for lawyers, raising the spirits of the dead when wills come into question. She also takes a few bounty hunting jobs on the side to help pay her mortgage. “Danny” is a wise-cracking whirlwind of energy with a haunting past that won’t quit. Devoted to the Egyptian god Anubis, she entertains Pagan readers with plenty of rituals, spells, and magick.

The series takes place in the near future, as the plot races from one high to the next at lightning speed. This is contemporary Occult fiction at its finest, the kind of book you can’t put down until you finish it. And one you’ll still be thinking about months later.

Saintcrow is a master at creating memorable characters and deftly plotted novels. If you’ve been searching for awesome Occult fiction to add to your personal collection, this should be the first series on your list. You won’t be disappointed!

Energy Vampires

June 3rd, 2007 by Admin

Do you sometimes wonder why you feel so drained after being with some people, while you feel energized when being with others?

Some people are energy vampires, and actually drain energy from you. How do they do this? What can you do to avoid this?

WAYS PEOPLE DRAIN ENERGY

Sometimes the ways people drain energy is obvious, and sometimes it is very subtle. A fairly obvious way is talking non-stop. I wrote an article on talking addiction and received the following response from a reader:

“Thank you so much for your article on talking addiction. For years now, I have wondered why I would feel so drained after listening to my mother. My mom is one of those people that can stay on the phone talking for hours and hours, and it’s a monologue. She is never interested in what I have to say unless it is about her. Lately, I’ve found myself hiding from her. For years, I would dodge her phone calls to conserve my energy. I have mentioned to her that she talks a lot but I think that it goes in one ear and out of the other. I am so glad that I read your article. Now I know that I’m not being mean when I go into my personal space.”

Some people drain energy by always complaining, or by having dramas that need attending to. Some people drain energy by wanting to process all the time about their problems. Others drain energy through various means of trying to get approval - such as asking a lot of questions, or bragging a lot, or being overly nice. Other people drain energy by sulking or crying - being a victim and hoping someone will give them attention.

There is a very common, yet subtle, way that many people drain energy. If you are a person who ignores your own feelings and who does not take care of your own needs, then it is likely that you have an empty hole inside you. Empty holes are like vacuums - they want to get filled. Even if you don’t overtly pull on others for attention or approval, your empty hole is a pull on their energy. Because you are not taking care of your own needs for love, attention and approval, you are automatically pulling on others for their love, attention and approval. Or, you might be pulling on them for affection or sex as a way to get your empty hole filled. When they pull back, you are left wondering what you did wrong.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO AVOID HAVING YOUR ENERGY DRAINED?

Most people who are energy vampires count on other people being so nice that they will give them the attention or approval they are seeking. Most people don’t like speaking up because they don’t want to hurt others’ feelings. However, when you do this, you are allowing yourself to take responsibility for the other person’s feelings rather than for your own feelings. You are abandoning yourself and making what the other person wants more important than taking care of yourself.

You cannot begin to stop the energy drain until you fully accept that you are not responsible for the other person’s feelings. It is your feeling responsible for the other person that allows you to get drained.

Once you accept that you are not responsible for the other person, but that you are responsible for yourself, you will discover that you can gently extricate yourself from a draining interaction. It is not hard to learn to get off the phone or walk away when you are taking responsibility for yourself rather than for the other person’s feelings.

Garlic Claims and Myths

Garlic – How to Use Garlic for Home Treatments

Claim:   Garlic and oil of oregano are proven to be effective treatments for anthrax.
Status:   False.

Origins:   Fear of contracting anthrax grow with each new case reported in New York and Washington. Ordinary folks — even the level-headed, non-panicky kind — are coming to think they might be at risk even if they don’t work at postal facilities, for news outlets, or for highly visible members of the nation’s government. There is thus an expanding desire to combat the perceived threat, both through neutralizing whatever anthrax spores might come into a household via the mail and by treating family members who could potentially be exposed.

Both these goals, while admirable in and of themselves, leave the unwary vulnerable to misinformation dressed up as unassailable science.

Raw garlic and oil of oregano have some usefulness as herbal antibiotics. “Garlic and oil of oregano have known antimicrobial and antibacterial properties,” says David Grotto, a registered dietitian and spokesman for the American Dietetic Association. Jean Carper’s 1988 book, The Food Pharmacy, echoes this praise accorded raw garlic. (Its pungent compound, allicin, is what provides its antibiotic kick, thus any preparation that involves using anything other than garlic in its raw form will not be effective for germ-fighting purposes.)

According to a study performed by Dr. Harry Preuss at Georgetown University, tests on mice appear to prove that oregano oil (in particular, carvacrol, one of oregano’s chemical components) reduce infection as effectively as traditional antibiotics. The oil was tested against the antibiotics streptomycin, penicillin, and vancomycin.

Preuss presented his findings in October 2001 at the American College of Nutrition’s annual meeting in Orlando. His study was paid for by North American Herb and Spice, a company admittedly with a vested interest in herb production and sale.

It’s at this point that science and the claims made about garlic and oil of oregano part ways. Nowhere in the study now so often pointed to does Preuss make claims about oil of oregano being effective against anthrax.

Preuss and Georgetown University say claims arising from this study that oil of oregano is a natural antibiotic “that is proven to be active against anthrax…” are grossly misleading. The study doesn’t say that. Likewise, we’ve yet to locate any study done by anyone that makes this claim, either about oil of oregano or garlic.

Current assertions that either of these substances are effective against anthrax have yet to be substantiated and are based on overstatements of what has so far been studied. It’s a far reach from “garlic is a nice little home remedy for an infected finger” to “garlic will save you and yours from anthrax,” yet that is the reach those intent upon vending herbal remedies or soapboxing about natural solutions have resorted to.

At times of heightened concern, it pays to keep one hand on your wallet. The unscrupulous are always looking to make a buck from misfortune, and September 11 and its aftermath have provided enough misfortune for these rascals to get very fat on. The vultures will offer quick solutions the average person supposedly could use in his own home to safeguard himself and his family. That the solutions don’t work at all or don’t work enough to be effective is unimportant to such parasites — they’re out the door with the money, and that’s all they care about. And if by chance one of those solutions happens to work out, it’s by guess and by golly, although those who entrust their lives to it think they’re buying science.

Counting on the public’s unfamiliarity with anthrax and the urge to feel there is something one can do in the face of a looming threat, some are attempting to sell snake oil to a populace desperate to feel protected. One such bit of fakery is an “anthrax exterminator,” a gadget that promises to eradicate the deadly spores from mail with a powerful zap of ultraviolet waves. Then there are the home testing kits for anthrax, bits of chicanery that are naught but out-and-out frauds.

Outstripping being bilked of the cost of whatever product the pigeon has been stuck with, the far larger issue is the false (and thus potentially life threatening) sense of security now instilled in the purchaser. Those believing they already have a handy-dandy cure for anthrax on hand are far less likely to seek appropriate treatment from mainstream health care providers when symptoms manifest. Likewise, those who think they have the ability to irradiate their mail to kill off lurking contagions are far less likely to realize something has gone wrong and that they need to seek treatment. The ultimate cost of snake oil could be someone’s life.

Haunted Skies: Ghosts Of The Eastern 401 Disaster

May 30th, 2007 by Admin

My experience with the story of Eastern Flight 401 began early in 1973. I flew from Tampa, Florida, to New York City and back several times that year. Most of my close relatives lived in the New York City area. During school breaks, I took the opportunity to combine visits with them with opportunities to attend various paranormal seminars scheduled for that year.

At sixteen, I was an experienced traveler and made most of my own airline reservations and arrangements. I hated crowds and loved red eye flights. Traveling at odd hours was no big deal for me. During the middle of Summer Break 1973, I was aboard a Sunday afternoon EAL flight that seemed almost empty. In those days there were always more flight attendants than needed on the off peak hours flights. The younger, less experienced crew members tended to hob knob with passengers. That’s how I met Susan. (I am being polite: Flight Attendants were called Stewardesses if they were women and Stewards if they were men in those days)

Her attention was drawn to a book I was reading about Flying Saucers. Like most of the flight attendants that I met during the 1970s, Susan was from the South. She seemed about twenty years old and had a pleasant personality. We talked on and off as her free time allowed. I had enough time in the air to know that there were several topics that you never brought up on a plane. These included UFOs and Airline Crashes, but both subjects came up anyway.

Susan was obviously well read on the UFO subject. Like me, she had relatives in the Air Force. She also knew people that had personally seen UFOs while on commercial flights. Most were not spectacular sightings, but strange enough to cause concern. What really got her started were some of the ghost stories I told. It turned out that hers was much better than mine.

I didn’t know much about the Flight 401 Air Disaster except that it involved an Eastern Airlines Passenger Jet which went down in the Florida Everglades about six months before. Personally, I was more concerned about airline hijackers in those days than crashes. Susan asked if I had heard any of the stories about ghosts from that flight appearing to people. I hadn’t. Before she could utter another word, a male flight attendant walking by grabbed her by the arm. Both vanished into the First Class section.

After a few minutes the male flight attendant reappeared. Although he worked in First Class, he came up to my seat and asked how I was doing? I said I was fine and didn’t need anything. He introduced himself as Bobby and asked if I wanted to move up to First Class. I accepted the invitation. While walking through the curtain that separated the sections, Susan whizzed by me with just a quick smile and stuffed some folded mimeographed papers into my hand. I shoved them into my pocket.

The five folded pages that Susan stuffed into my hand looked like some kind of insider’s newsletter. Something a Flight Attendant had put together for other Flight Attendants. It made reference to the 401 crash and how that some flight crews were seeing ghosts from the 401 crash. The pages were badly worn and had obviously been passed around and handled a lot. Although names and specifics were left out, it was obvious that this was a how-to sheet for crew members that wanted to avoid being on planes known for the 401 ghost appearances.

After we landed, I told Bobby that I left something in my seat back in coach. Before he could say anything, I headed back to speak to Susan. She was putting away pillows, so I thanked her for being so nice, pulled the mimeographed sheets out of my pocket and asked her, “Did you see any of the ghosts?” She looked down and thanked me for flying Eastern. Cold! I felt as if I had been dumped by a prom date! I mean, it wasn’t like I expected her to give me her telephone number. I just wanted to talk Airline spooks.

While in New York, I went to a library and looked up more information about the crash. It seems that the whole thing began when Flight 401 left Tampa for New York on December 29, 1972. The flight crew was Pilot Bob Loft, First Officer Albert Stockstill and Flight Engineer Don Repo. On the return leg to Miami, a problem developed. While on approach to Miami International at 11:30pm, a landing gear light failed to come on. As a result, the crew attempted to be sure the gear was down.

While trying to remedy the landing gear light issue, it’s likely that someone bumped the aircraft control column and deactivated the auto pilot. This caused a slow decent that wasn’t noticed by the flight crew until it was too late. Loft and Stockstill perished in the cockpit, although Loft hung on for a while after the crash. Stockstill was thirty-nine and Loft was fifty-five years old. Don Repo, fifty-one years old, initially survived the crash and died a day later in the hospital. In the end, ninety-six of one hundred and sixty-three passengers died.

Two weeks later I flew back to Tampa, Florida. I wondered if it had been sheer luck that caused me to learn about the 401 ghost stories on a flight from Tampa and to New York. Maybe, but I wasn’t lucky enough to end up on a flight with Susan again. My off peak flight took off on a late Sunday afternoon with a completely different crew. There were maybe thirty people on board and we ended up with an experienced Flight Attendant. She was kind of bossy, so I sat and read quietly.

At some point, I took out the folded pages that Susan gave me. I tucked them into a notebook I purchased at the airport and had been trying to decode the worn mimeo sheets for days. It proved difficult and was very frustrating, but I thought I would use the flight time back to Florida to try again. While I was using a magnifying glass to try and make out the words and letters, a member of the flight crew passed by. It was the First Officer headed to the back of the aircraft.

I probably wouldn’t have noticed him, but he stopped at my seat and looked at the sheets. He asked, “Pardon me, did someone on this flight or at the airport give that to you?” I told him no and made the mistake of saying that I found it in one of the magazines on board. I didn’t want to get Susan in trouble. He reached over and grabbed it out of my hands saying it was a scandal sheet passed around by ill-informed employees.

I had no way of knowing that I was flying Eastern at a time when the Flight 401 ghost sightings were at their high point. The sightings began in January of 1973 and continued in earnest until the summer of 1974. These events were exposed to the world in The Ghost of Flight 401, a book written by John G. Fuller. Fuller is one of my favorite authors. His book, Interrupted Journey chronicled the famous Betty and Barney Hill UFO Abduction Case and there were others like Incident at Exeter that I enjoyed as well.

Fuller’s book came out a couple of years after the ghost sightings ended. His wife, Elizabeth, was an Eastern Flight Attendant that helped him get the goods on the 401 ghost sightings. Her book, My Search for the Ghost of Flight 401, was just as good as his and I read both with equal enthusiasm. Anyone interested the paranormal should dig up copies of these and read them cover to cover.

The film, The Ghost of Flight 401, starred Ernest Borgnine and was a part of a one-two punch delivered by Hollywood. The second was the release of Crash, another film about the 401 disaster. This one starred William Shatner. Both films were shown on Broadcast Television in the USA and released in theaters in some other Countries. All told, the films were well received and probably gave Frank Borman more sleepless nights than the ghosts themselves.

In The Ghost of Flight 401, the ghosts appear as any human would. For example, during a 1973 flight from Newark to Miami, A Flight Attendant was doing a head count when she noticed a man in an Eastern Airlines Pilot uniform seated with the passengers. He refused to acknowledge her, so she contacted the flight crew. The Captain of that flight came back to see what was going on and recognized the man as Bob Loft. He cried out, “Oh my God, that’s Bob Loft!” At that point Loft vanished. Everyone present saw it happen.

During a 1974 flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Newark, NJ, the Pilot sees Don Repo sitting in the Flight Engineer’s seat. Repo says, “There will never be another crash of an L-1011, we will not allow it.” Repo vanishes after speaking. During another sighting, Repo appeared to a Flight Crew member and said he had completed the preflight check.

On another occasion, a Flight Attendant saw a man in a Flight Engineer uniform fixing a microwave oven. Thinking nothing of it, she went about her business. Later she asked the Flight Engineer what was wrong with the microwave. He had no idea what she was talking about. Repo also appeared several times in the Hell Hole (electronics room) beneath the cockpit after crew members heard knocking in that area and went to investigate.

While boarding a flight that would take him from JFK in New York to Miami International in 1973, a Vice President of Eastern Airlines entered the First Class Cabin and saw an Eastern Pilot sitting there. When he got close enough to see his face, it was Bob Loft. Loft vanished before his eyes. Loft was seen by a number of flight crews and spoke occasionally warning about problems or potential problems on board an aircraft.

There were some other types of appearances as well. Flight Attendant Faye Merryweather saw the face of Don Repo staring at her from an oven in the galley of Tri-Star 318. The galley was salvaged from the wreckage of 401. Merryweather summoned two other Flight Attendants. One was a friend of Repo and recognized his face. Repo spoke and said, “Watch out for fire on this airplane.” The airliner ended up having engine trouble a short time later on route to Acapulco. After landing, the rest of its flight was cancelled.
And it wasn’t just flight crews that saw the deceased crew members.

Several Marriott Food Service workers saw a Flight Engineer vanish in the galley of an airliner being stocked for the next flight and refused to continue their work. That flight was delayed for over an hour. Airline cleaners and mechanics began to find reasons to avoid working on or in Ship #318 where most of the sightings took place. Some believe that’s because parts were salvaged from the aircraft involved in the 401 crash and transplanted into #318. It’s as good as explanation as any.

Although the details remain sketchy and there’s a great deal of disagreement about it, the end of the ghost sightings may have had something to do with a psychic intervention of sorts. It’s been reported that one or more people who knew Loft and Repo managed to contact them through the help of a psychic medium who persuaded them to move on. The ghost sightings ended about a year and a half after the crash.

A haunting of this intensity and frequency reveals how woefully inadequate our attempts to understand or investigate the paranormal have been. This is especially true of those who do not care to acknowledge paranormal events in the first place. Rather than believe their own people, Eastern chose to ignore the ghost reports and recommend mental health evaluations and treatment for those who saw them. If the ghosts that appeared after the 401 crash have taught us anything, I would hope it is that simply ignoring paranormal events will not make them vanish into thin air.
